Artist Statement
In our current society, we are constantly besieged with politics, hordes of bills, and a constant struggle to keep our heads above water. We forget in these times the ease and wonder of being captured by pure unadulterated imagination, because of this stories are a foundation in my work. They are not only a tool for me but a need to recapture magic found in pure fantasy, of escaping the real world. More often than not my work has a childlike touch to it, however, a recurring theme within my practice is adult humor and situations, placed within a fantastical realm. My creatures and characters, weather created by me or borrowed from well-known tales, blend childhood fantasy with adultness creating a new dimension. One that brings back the magic of being lost in a fantasy world that we have forgotten to indulge in as adults.
I explore my narratives through a variety of mediums, but have found that sculpture, installation, painting, and writing are the most immersive experiences to bring life to my stories. My work with installation, sculpture, and character design is often influenced by Victorian aesthetics, historical objects, oddities, folklore, and what if questions. I have always had an interest in figurative work as well as dark humor and sarcastic characters. These attributes blend into my narratives, creating creatures and characters whose function is to bring magic into a world that waits for no one. It is my role to tell these stories and bring my viewers back to a fantasy world that unfolds in front of their eyes.
